Walking and Biking Safety in the Dark

As the winter season sets in, the days grow shorter, and more people walk and run in the dark. For those Gatewood Residents who enjoy outdoor activities like walking, jogging, or biking, this means confronting reduced visibility and increased safety risks. To ensure your safety and that of others, we recommend using safety vests and headlamps. When the sun sets, visibility decreases, making it more challenging for drivers and pedestrians to spot each other. Wearing a headlamp or flashlight provides you with a consistent source of light that not only helps you see the path ahead but ensures you are seen by others. This is particularly important in areas with fewer street lights or curvier sections of Gatewood.

Accidents involving pedestrians often occur when drivers cannot see walkers in time to react. Reflective gear, such as vests, armbands, or clothing with reflective strips, can significantly reduce the risk of accidents. These materials bounce back light from car headlights, making pedestrians stand out even in the darkest conditions.

Drivers: make sure to drive at the speed limit in the neighborhood at all times; stop at all stop signs; and give pedestrians the right of way. You would want that from drivers if you were a pedestrian walking as well.

Walkers: Please walk facing traffic.

Bicyclists: Please ride with traffic.
