Coming soon to Gatewood: Pickleball!

Pickleball is the game that’s sweeping the nation. Combining parts of tennis, badminton and table tennis, pickleball is showing up everywhere. Resort and residential communities are converting more and more of their tennis courts to this fast, fun and easy to learn sport. It’s appropriate for all ages and sexes. Families, teens, grandparents and grandchildren of all skill levels can play together on the same court. Is it right for you? Google how to play Pickleball or check out this (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RF5RyCh7GNc) link to learn what Pickleball is and how to play.

For the time being we will add yellow taped lines to Court 2 of our existing hard tennis courts to create two pickleball courts. Nets can be checked out at the pro shop as well as paddles and balls. During this introductory period, you won’t need to come with a partner to any scheduled event. A pickleball ambassador will be available to teach you how to play and keep things organized. Plans are for these to begin July 8 on Monday and Friday mornings at 9am and Tuesday and Thursday evenings at 6pm. There will be no charge to participate. If you are a resident or tennis member participating, a non-member can come with you. Please call the pro shop 864-223-1594 to sign up for these sessions.

Residents and tennis members can reserve a court, net and paddles and play at other times the pro shop is open as well. Paul is considering a weekly pickleball session for kids of varying ages so be looking for that. Eventually, you’ll want to purchase your own paddle and balls but it’s a good idea to learn how to play first. Please indicate your interest in having pickleball in general at Gatewood by emailing Lynn Isenhower @ lbisenhower@gmail.com. If there is enough interest, we will investigate ways to add permanent pickleball courts on court 11. See you on the Pickleball court!
